Zohran Mamdani confirms his intention to make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
NYC's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue throughout his election bid.
An Iconic Home
Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors from the World War II era.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central issue, was not quick to announce this decision right away after his electoral win in November.
"This decision rested on keeping my family safe and the importance of focusing all of my focus on enacting the platform on affordability the city's residents voted for," Mamdani said in a statement.
Leaving Astoria
His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community known for its abundance of immigrant communities and global cuisine.
"To Astoria: my gratitude for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he noted.
"While I may no longer live there, Astoria will continue to reside a part of me and my work," he said.
Campaign Controversy
In his race for mayor, Mamdani linked his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.
But his critics, including former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the apartment even though he is from a famous family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, chose to live in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a place for official events, and pushed for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.
A Grand New Home
As he settles into Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting a stark contrast to his previous Astoria digs.
Featuring cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished to reflect the home's early 19th-century origins.
The property, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also has fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Some residents have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and shutting on their own, and the floorboards made strange noises.
The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "I don't care what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
His former home is rent stabilised, meaning the city sets limits on how much landlords can raise the rent each year.
Tenants see such units as essential protections as the cost of housing exceeds the average income.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the average rent for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
