The Showrunner Shares He Knows How Pluribus Will End... For Now.
The acclaimed writer-producer could not have predicted that Pluribus would become a breakout success. “I am so grateful to the audience,” Gilligan says. “It was unexpected the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed sci-fi show coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will shape the storyline of Pluribus.
On the Tremendous Fan Response
It would be easy to get distracted by the constant speculation and fan theories regarding Pluribus. He is striving to steer clear of all that.
“The experience is akin to an endless supply of something incredibly sweet and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I get wind of it from others, and that's by design. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says writer and executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not changed by audience chatter.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Has the creator Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Given that the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, does that mean they have mapped out how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.
“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and we're in there,” he says humorously, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, why mess with the legendary finales?
“I want Carol to awaken next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
