Gavin Newsom, a prominent Democratic figure, has revealed that he intends to make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 once the 2026 elections conclude.

"Absolutely, it would be dishonest if I denied it," the governor commented when asked about giving serious thought to a presidential run after the 2026 midterms. "That wouldn't be honest. And I won't do that."

Newsom's current term as governor concludes in early 2027, and he cannot run again. Yet, he cautioned that any determination is still years away.

"It's up to destiny," he remarked.

Rising Profile as a Trump Critic

Newsom has emerged as a prominent adversary of the current federal leadership, employing his digital presence and championing a proposition that would boost Democratic House seats in following redistricting by Republicans. This move has drawn criticism from adversaries.

Controversy Over Funds

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom does not care about the state's residents in a recent segment on Fox News. Duffy announced plans to cut taxpayer dollars from California and warned suspending the state's ability to grant commercial driver's licenses.

"I'm about to pull $160 million from California," he stated, following a recently reported tragic collision in California involving an undocumented semi truck driver that caused three deaths and casualties.

Newsom's office noted that the federal government had approved the worker's status repeatedly, which permitted him to secure a trucking license under national regulations.

The transportation secretary had previously indicated he was withholding additional funds from the state for failing to implement linguistic standards for CDL holders.

Firm Rebuttal from the Administration

"One-time television figure, now Secretary of Transportation, still doesn't understand federal law," his administration said in a previous statement countering Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: California commercial driver's license holders had a death rate nearly 40% lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Facts don't lie. This administration is dishonest."
