Our team is checking video footage and photographs posted this morning that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking soldier in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that detonated and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is under way.
The initial step to verify the location from which the pictures were from relied on social media reports saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.
Identifying additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified where the footage were captured.
We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not been manipulated.
