Democrats Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment

Democratic officials demonstrated anger after Donald Trump charged a group of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be detained and sentenced "with execution" following their posting of a controversial video.

The Recording That Triggered the Controversy

The video footage, released on Tuesday, includes six Democratic elected officials who previously served in military or security capacities.

"As we did, you all made an oath to protect and support this founding document," the officials stated in the short video. "Currently, the dangers to our governing document don't only come from foreign nations, but from within our own country. Our regulations are clear, you can refuse illegal orders, you can decline unlawful commands, you should decline illegal orders. No one has to carry out orders that contravene the legal system or our constitution."

Donald Trump's Angry Reply

The video message appeared to trigger a angry reaction from the former president.

On the following morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."

In an additional post, he wrote: "This constitutes really bad, and Dangerous to our United States. Their words cannot be enabled to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"

In a third publication, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"

Democratic Officials Respond

Following Trump's remarks on that day, Democratic leadership issued a unified declaration censuring the comments.

"Political violence has no place in this nation," they stated. "Representatives who were featured in the video all acted our country with exceptional national pride and distinction. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous threats of violence against members of Congress, and call on Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."

The opposition officials also said that they had been in touch with security officials "to make certain the safety of these members and their relatives."

"Donald Trump must right away remove these unhinged social media posts and retract his dangerous rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the statement added.

Officials' Firm Answer

The representatives who were featured in the video also published a declaration.

"We identify as ex-military personnel and security experts who care for this nation and swore an pledge to defend and defend the founding document of the United States," they stated. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we intend to keep it. No threat, pressure, or promotion of aggression will stop us from that fundamental responsibility."

"What's most telling is that the president views it punishable by execution for us to restate the statutes," they continued. "Our service members should recognize that we have their protection as they fulfill their pledge to the constitution and obligation to follow only legal commands. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our responsibility."

They stated: "Every American must unite and denounce the ex-president's requests for our murder and political violence. This is a moment for principled stance."

More Governmental Reactions

The Democratic Senate minority leader also censured Trump's statements and shared on online networks: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the capital punishment of elected officials."

He continued: "This represents an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, each house member, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should condemn this immediately and without qualification."

The Conservative official justified Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", describing the video as "highly unsuitable", adding: "This constitutes very harmful, you have prominent officials of the legislature telling soldiers to disobey orders, I think that is without precedent in US history."

The Conservative representative also allegedly informed the press that in what he examined of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the crime of treason" but that "legal experts have to parse the terminology and determine all that."

Executive Branch Reaction

During a White House press conference on later that day, when questioned by a reporter, "Does the president want to execute elected officials?", the White House press secretary replied: "No."

"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is reacting to," the official said. "There are sitting members of the American legislature who coordinated to organize a recorded statement to personnel of the US military, to serving soldiers urging them to ignore the president's proper directives."

She added: "The integrity of our military depends on the chain of command, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can lead to fatalities, it can cause chaos, and that's what these elected officials ... are fundamentally encouraging."
